This is Gru

Meet Gru. She's one of 4 ex-battery hens we adopted in August. The term 'battery hen' isn't used much in the UK these days as hens are now in 'enriched cages' or 'barn raised' instead. But as you can see from her lack of feathers the conditions are still pretty awful.

Gru is only 18 months old. At the age of 18 months chickens are deemed to have passed the peak of their profitability and sent to slaughter. Now as a backyard chicken she can expect to live to the proper age of 8 or 9 years. 


Please buy free range eggs and help put an end to the terrible conditions 'enriched cages' and 'barn raised' hens have to go through.
